Wisdom Calling

Proverbs 8 is a magnificent passage about wisdom. While all of Proverbs by their nature is filled with wisdom, this chapter specifically spends the whole time just talking about the blessings and nature of wisdom.

Let us look at the first few verses.

“8 Does not wisdom call?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
On the heights beside the way,
at the crossroads she takes her stand;
beside the gates in front of the town,
at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:”

The point is made that no matter where you go wisdom is calling out to you. It is seeking to find you and for you to find it. God desires for us to seek and to act upon wisdom in our lives.

10 Take my instruction instead of silver,
and knowledge rather than choice gold,
11 for wisdom is better than jewels,
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

“Nothing can compare with her.” The slogan for many teens and youth of the nation over the last few years has been YOLO, you only live once. For most, this is an excuse to through caution to the wind and do what ever looks like fun, seems like fun, or feels like fun, instead of looking to wisdom. Wisdom is the most valuable commodity is what Solomon is saying. We must answer wisdoms call and seek to find and practice wisdom in our daily lives.

“33 Hear instruction and be wise,
and do not neglect it.
34 Blessed is the one who listens to me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting beside my doors.
35 For whoever finds me finds life
and obtains favor from the Lord,
36 but he who fails to find me injures himself;
all who hate me love death.”

If you hear or learn wisdom, then do it. Seek wisdom for in it is life and the ways of living right before God and before man. If you hate wisdom it will not go well with you. Sometimes it is hard for us to take a humble pill and learn from others and hear their wisdom. But if we listen to what older and wiser men and women have to say, and apply it to our actions and responses in life, it will lead to a fuller more complete life. We should be teachable to the wisdom of God and others around us.

Seek wisdom for it is life. When wisdom calls, listen and apply it to your life.
