Proverbs chapter four is about pursuing and gaining wisdom. The picture is of a father pulling aside his young boy and teaching him wisdom. Encouraging him to seek wisdom and find it. For it is wisdom that guides us, and teaches us to follow in the right paths of life. Solomon describes the path of righteousness in the following verse.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. (Proverbs 4:18 ESV)
Our lives are more peaceful when we follow the path of righteousness. The world tries to tell us that living without any sense of morals is good, and fun. Partying, sex outside of marriage, drinking, and drugs are for the people who want to have fun, they try to tell us. When in reality the opposite is true.
He continues on “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:18, 23 ESV)”
The challenge is to keep or guard your heart. Specifically this refers to single people. So many people give their hearts away in the first few weeks of dating. Soon after there might be a break up, if this happens a lot then there is not much left to give to a future spouse. So guard your heart. Seek wisdom. Follow the paths of Righteousness.
