Have you ever struggled with your identity? Many people find their identity in athletics, things, friends, celebrities, hobbies, sexuality and more. As Christians our identity should be defined by who Christ says we are.
Recently I was studying to speak on the topic of our identity in Christ and compiled a list of who God says we are in Christ. I pray that this list is one for you to bookmark, print out or just focus on to encourage you in who you are in Christ.
Here is what the Bible says we are:
We are Loved
John 3:16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Made New
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!
Made in God’s Image
Genesis 1:26-27 26 Then God said, “Let us make manh in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
Psalms 139:14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
We are Chosen
Ephesians 1:4, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
We are adopted
Revelations 2:17, He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’
Ephesians 1:5, he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will
Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
We have been redeemed
Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
We are His Children
John 1:12, But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
1 John 3:1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Children of Light
Ephesians 5:8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
We are pursued
Hosea 2:14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her.
We are overcomers
1 John 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
We are Heirs with Christ
Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
A Royal Priesthood
1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
God’s People
1 Peter 2:10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Receivers of Mercy

Delighted In

A temple of the Holy Spirit

A Saint
